Nastars was formed in the year 1976, when the Non-aligned Movement summit was hosted by Sri Lanka at the B.M.I.C.H in Colombo where over 100 World Leaders from all over the World attended this conference.
It was formed by Mr. Asenkudhoos Abdul Rasid, renowned businessman who had vast experience of over 5 decades in Trading and Distribution of Consumer products, Transport business, Estate Management. He then acquired a shop at one of the premium spots at the Model market at Colombo 3. Mr. Rasid along with his Sons registered this Firm initially on a partnership basis in 1976 and later on in 1984 was incorporated into a Limited Liability Company with Mr. Rasid as the Chairman and his six sons as Company Directors of the Firm.
At the initial stage, Nastars was popular for all types of Textiles, tourist gifts and other products relating to local and foreign customers who patronized the shop.
We then became very popular from the year 1978 onwards, when there was an open economy and we started dealing with electrical and electronic products which were not available in most of the other places of shopping. The Company started importing quality Audio tapes "Concert" brand from Singapore and were very popular amongst the local & foreign customers who patronized the shop. This was also the period when the first Duty Free Shop was introduced by the Government. We then started supplying Duty Free Goods with warranty from the Agents to customers which included the Rich and highly influential people in the Colombo area, including the High Commissions, Foreign Embassies and Diplomatic Missions in Sri Lanka.
Nastars slowly but surely built up its reputation as the place to buy electronic and electrical products at a reasonable price and of impeccable quality. This quality was assured by none other than the Directors of this Company who worked tirelessly in building up long lasting relationships with the customers.
In 1984, Nastars was offered a valuable business premises at the newly built Shopping Complex in Colombo 3, called Liberty Plaza and took this opportunity to move into a more spacious and modern showroom was opened in 1984 at No 51, Liberty Plaza, and Colombo 3 to cater to our valuable customers. In 1990, Nastars acquired Premises No 52, Liberty Plaza, adjoining shop to make the showroom more spacious and to add value to the business and later went onto to own both premises.
In 1990, Nastars was able build its own Office building in a highly valuable property in Colombo 3 adjoining "Temple Tree" where the President of Sri Lanka Resides. The Import and export business was handled from this newly acquired office.
In the year 1994, we made a decision to expand into another shopping complex, Majestic City. This store is located at 2-57 (second floor), Majestic City, Colombo 4.
The variety of Consumer Electronics Products offered at Nastars range from global brands; Apple, Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, Phillips, Casio, Black & Decker, Kenwood, etc. The product range grew vast with the years and popularity grew.
